Can AI agents automate MATLAB?

MATLAB is automatable today through official Engine APIs that start or attach to a licensed local MATLAB session and evaluate functions or workspace statements from Python, .NET, C++, or Java. Those engines require an installed MATLAB; MATLAB Runtime alone is not sufficient. On Windows, a COM Automation server remains documented, but MathWorks steers new .NET work to the Engine API. The official MATLAB MCP Server is a maintained first-party stdio server for Claude, VS Code Copilot, Codex, and other MCP hosts. It exposes five built-in tools for toolbox detection, static code checks, statement evaluation, script execution, and unit tests, plus optional JSON-defined custom tools and coding guideline resources. The server needs MATLAB R2021a or later on PATH, a MathWorks license that is not shared across users, and a local session. The matlab command's -batch option runs scripts non-interactively with stdout/stderr logging and process exit codes, which is useful for CI but is not a structured resource CLI. MATLAB Production Server is a separate paid product that can expose packaged functions over REST or as remote MCP tools; it is not this desktop identity. Simulink is excluded. Named Zapier and n8n connectors were not established. Microsoft's connector catalog had no MATLAB connector on 2026-08-28. Computer-use viability is unassessed.
