Can AI agents automate Smartsheet?
Smartsheet · saas · work-managementproject-management
Smartsheet sheets, reports, and dashboards are automatable today through REST API 2.0 at https://api.smartsheet.com/2.0, with regional hosts at api.smartsheet.eu, api.smartsheet.au, and api.smartsheetgov.com. The API is restricted to Business, Enterprise, and Advanced Work Management plans. Callers authenticate with a user-generated API access token or OAuth 2.0 authorization-code tokens, sent as an Authorization Bearer header. Official SDKs exist for JavaScript/Node.js, Python, Java, and C#. The documented surface covers sheets, rows, columns, reports, dashboards, folders, workspaces, discussions, attachments, users, and webhooks, including bulk row updates and CSV/XLSX sheet import. Most operations are limited to 300 requests per minute per token; file attachments and cell history count as 10 requests. Some admin and Event Reporting operations need Enterprise or Advanced Work Management, and Event Reporting is a premium add-on. A first-party hosted MCP server at https://mcp.smartsheet.com (EU mcp.smartsheet.eu, AU mcp.smartsheet.au) is generally available on the same Business, Enterprise, and Advanced Work Management plans. It authenticates with OAuth 2.0 or an API token and exposes 30+ tools for sheets, rows, columns, reports, dashboards, discussions, attachments, workspaces, and charts. Portfolio tools require Enterprise or Advanced Work Management. Vendor docs cover Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini Enterprise Plus, Amazon Quick, Cursor, Codex, and other MCP clients. MCP tools inherit API rate limits; search returns at most 100 results; first-time API users may wait up to 24 hours for search provisioning. The official MCP registry search for smartsheet listed only a third-party Resource Management (10,000ft) wrapper, which is outside this product boundary. Zapier, Make, and Microsoft Power Automate publish Smartsheet connectors for rows, sheets, and discussions. n8n's built-in Smartsheet node path returned 404 on 2026-09-01. No official general-purpose CLI was established. Computer-use viability is unassessed. API and MCP both score 8. API is the best path because it is the full documented machine contract and does not require an MCP-compliant client.
