Can AI agents automate Ignition?

Ignition is automatable today through the Ignition 8.3 Gateway HTTP API. This record is Inductive Automation's Ignition industrial platform for SCADA, IIoT, and MES, including Ignition Designer and unlimited-tag server licensing. It is not Siemens TIA Portal, AVEVA, or LabVIEW. The Gateway publishes a dynamically generated OpenAPI document at /openapi and /openapi.json. Documented routes, including configuration resources under /data/api/v1/resources, support list, create, update, and delete for infrastructure-as-code and remote Gateway setup. Callers authenticate with a Gateway API Key in the X-Ignition-API-Token header. That REST surface is configuration-centric and limited to routes that installed modules document; it is not a complete plant-tag REST catalog. Custom REST for tags and external systems is a licensed Web Dev module that mounts Python doGet, doPost, doPut, and doDelete handlers under /system/webdev. With the OPC UA module, Ignition is both an OPC UA server and client for live device and tag data. Python scripting uses Jython 2.7 and the system.* library inside Designer, Gateway, and session scopes. The official Module SDK is Java (JDK 17 on Ignition 8.3) for Gateway, Designer, and OPC UA driver modules. The host-local gwcmd utility backs up and restores .gwbk files, restores projects as .zip, restarts the Gateway, and changes ports; it requires administrative privileges on the Gateway host and is not a structured resource CLI. Event Streams can accept HTTP POST and PUT at /system/eventstream/{project}/{resource} when Web Dev is installed. Standard Ignition is installable on Windows, Linux, and macOS; clients web-deploy from an on-premise or cloud-based server. Ignition Cloud Edition is a marketplace-hosted edition, so deployment is hybrid. Inductive Automation's July 2026 article says an MCP Module will be released later in 2026. The opened 8.3 user manual does not document that module, so first-party MCP is unassessed. Named iPaaS connectors were not opened. Computer-use viability is unassessed. API scores 7 and is the best path. CLI scores 4 as a host-local admin tool.
