Can AI agents automate Storybook?

Storybook · hybrid · developer-toolsdesign

Storybook is automatable today through the first-party @storybook/addon-mcp server. This record is the Storybook UI workshop. It is not Chromatic and not Figma. Storybook's AI capabilities are documented as preview; the API may change. Install with npx storybook add @storybook/addon-mcp. While the Storybook dev server is running, the MCP endpoint is typically http://localhost:6006/mcp. Toolsets are development, docs, and testing. Development tools include stories-changed, get-storybook-story-instructions, stories-preview, stories-find-by-component, and review-create. Testing is test-run when @storybook/addon-vitest is enabled. The docs toolset (docs-list, docs-show, docs-show-story) needs a components manifest, which Storybook documents only for React frameworks, @storybook/angular-vite, and @storybook/vue3-vite. Other frameworks, including @storybook/angular Webpack and Vue setups other than vue3-vite, generate no manifest and have no docs toolset. Sharing the MCP server publishes only the docs toolset and therefore has the same framework limit. The official storybook CLI runs and builds the workshop (dev, build, init) with --ci and --quiet. Official addon APIs are JavaScript and TypeScript. The product LICENSE is MIT. No public product REST API was established. Computer-use viability is unassessed. MCP scores 6 because the official server is useful but preview and docs-limited. The CLI scores 6 as a workshop runner, not the agent component surface. MCP is the best path for agents that need stories, docs, and tests.

Best path today: mcp · Overall automatability: 6/10

No repeatable UI probe was run. This record is the Storybook UI workshop and @storybook/addon-mcp. It is not Chromatic as a standalone visual-testing product and not Figma. Agents should use the first-party MCP server or the official CLI rather than driving the workshop UI. Computer-use viability is a separate unassessed path.
