Can AI agents automate OneNote?
Microsoft · hybrid · productivitynotesoffice-suite
OneNote has a real but content-model-constrained automation surface rather than no API. Microsoft Graph v1.0 can list and create notebooks, sections, section groups, and pages for personal OneDrive, Microsoft 365, group, and SharePoint-site notebooks. It retrieves page bodies as HTML and creates or modifies pages through HTML, multipart payloads, and element-targeted JSON patches; it can also copy and permanently delete pages. The stable overview explicitly says that the OneNote API does not support app-only authentication, so unattended tenant automation must not be assumed even though some operation pages now display application-permission rows. That documentation conflict needs a live tenant probe before any app-only design is accepted. The API also has HTML-element restrictions, request and section limits, incomplete national-cloud availability, and no full-fidelity canvas object model or general search surface. Microsoft's generated Graph SDKs and Graph PowerShell module expose the same API as typed clients and cmdlets. The standard first-party OneNote Business connector gives Power Automate, Logic Apps, Power Apps, and Copilot Studio practical page and section actions plus polling triggers, but it requires a OneDrive for Business notebook and has documented throttling and feature limits. An official OneNote-specific MCP server, native change-notification surface, and repeatable computer-use result were not established.
