Can AI agents automate Microsoft Purview?
Microsoft · saas · enterpriseplatform
Microsoft Purview is automatable today through several REST surfaces, not one product-wide API. This record is the unified data-governance, data-security, and compliance platform used in the Microsoft Purview portal. It is not Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Sentinel, or Microsoft Defender XDR. Data Map callers authenticate a Microsoft Entra service principal and request a client-credentials token for resource https://purview.azure.net, then call the account Atlas endpoint for entities, business metadata, labels, glossary, and types. Unified Catalog APIs at the datagovernance catalog path manage domains, data products, glossary terms, and data assets; those APIs are public preview. Microsoft Graph exposes Purview eDiscovery cases, holds, searches, and review sets. E3 tenants can automate standard eDiscovery with delegated OAuth. App-only access and premium review-set operations require E5 or an equivalent add-on. Coverage is partial because governance, catalog, and compliance APIs are separate, Unified Catalog is preview, and solution cards in the portal depend on subscription and role. Azure CLI ships a preview az purview extension that creates and lists accounts; it does not replace data-plane catalog calls. A first-party Purview MCP server is not established on the opened pages. Connector catalogs were not opened. Computer-use viability is unassessed. API scores 7 and is the best path. CLI scores 4 because it is official but account-scoped and preview.
