Can AI agents automate Microsoft Fabric?
Microsoft · saas · platformbusiness-intelligencedeveloper-tools
Microsoft Fabric is automatable today through the Fabric REST APIs on https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/. Core APIs create, read, update, and delete items across workloads; workload APIs target specific item types such as lakehouses, notebooks, and pipelines. Callers acquire a Microsoft Entra token and send it as a Bearer header. Delegated user tokens use scopes such as Workspace.ReadWrite.All and Item.ReadWrite.All. Service principals and managed identities work after a Fabric administrator enables the Service principals can use Fabric APIs tenant setting, and each operation documents whether those identities are supported. Unified identity quotas of 200 calls per minute apply to platform, job-scheduler, and long-running-operation groups, with HTTP 429 and Retry-After on RequestBlocked, and a separate CapacityLimitExceeded path when the F SKU is overloaded. The official Fabric CLI (pip install ms-fabric-cli) browses workspaces like a file system, runs pipelines and notebooks, copies OneLake files, and signs in as a user, service principal, or managed identity. fabric-cicd is Microsoft's official Python library for publishing Git item definitions to workspaces. First-party MCP is official but preview: the remote Fabric Core MCP at https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/mcp/core maps tools to REST for catalog search, workspaces, items, permissions, folders, and capacities over Streamable HTTP and Entra OAuth; it does not modify data inside items. The local Fabric MCP Server (VS Code extension, npx @microsoft/fabric-mcp, or microsoft/mcp source) adds offline API docs, OneLake file tools, and item create. This record excludes standalone Power BI and standalone Azure. Zapier, Make, Power Automate, and n8n listings were not opened. Computer-use viability is unassessed. API scores 8 and is the best path because it is the documented control plane; MCP is a limited vendor preview.
