Can AI agents automate dbt?

dbt is automatable today through the official CLI and a first-party MCP server. dbt Core, Fusion, and the dbt platform CLI all invoke as dbt and run, build, test, and related project commands on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Self-hosted MCP via uvx dbt-mcp can execute those CLI commands and optionally call platform APIs. Remote MCP is hosted on dbt Platform at an account /api/ai/v1/mcp URL for consumption use cases such as metrics and lineage; it does not run local dbt run, build, or test. Exhausting Copilot actions blocks every remote tool. Platform Administrative REST, Discovery GraphQL, and Semantic Layer APIs are documented and use personal access tokens or service tokens, but only on Starter and Enterprise-tier plans. The Developer plan has no API. Official dbt-sl-sdk is a Python Semantic Layer client. Job webhooks exist on paid plans. Zapier, Make, Microsoft Power Automate, and n8n had no native dbt app on 2026-08-30. Computer-use viability is unassessed. CLI scores 8 and is the best path because it works for Core and Platform without the Starter-plus API gate.
