Can AI agents automate Google Cloud?
Google · saas · developer-toolsplatformenterprise
Google Cloud is automatable today through Cloud APIs and the gcloud CLI. This record is the Google Cloud Platform control plane — Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, IAM, and the other GCP products — not Gmail, not Google Docs, not Google Sheets, and not BigQuery as a standalone warehouse identity. Cloud APIs expose JSON HTTP on googleapis.com hosts and, for most services, gRPC. TLS is required. Callers authenticate with OAuth 2.0 user credentials or service-account credentials; Application Default Credentials is the documented library strategy that locates those credentials. Official Cloud Client Libraries cover Java, C++, Python, Node.js, Ruby, Go, .NET, PHP, and Rust. The gcloud CLI manages VMs, Cloud SQL, GKE, and other resources from scripts, with --format json, yaml, or csv and --quiet for non-interactive use. Infrastructure Manager deploys Terraform configurations as first-party managed infrastructure as code. Eventarc can deliver CloudEvents to HTTP endpoints. Google documents first-party remote MCP servers on Google infrastructure. The supported-products table lists HTTP endpoints such as run.googleapis.com/mcp, compute.googleapis.com/mcp, container.googleapis.com/mcp, storage.googleapis.com/storage/mcp, sqladmin.googleapis.com/mcp, firestore.googleapis.com/mcp, pubsub.googleapis.com/mcp, and logging.googleapis.com/mcp. Several products in that table are marked Preview, including Cloud Billing, Cloud Asset Inventory, Cloud CLI Execution, and Gemini Cloud Assist. Cloud Run, Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, Firestore, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Logging are listed without a Preview label. Clients need the MCP Tool User role plus service permissions. The google/mcp repository lists remote and local servers; that README says the repo itself is not an officially supported Google product, while the remote servers are documented on docs.cloud.google.com. Workspace MCP endpoints and BigQuery stay on their own records. Connector catalogs were not opened. Computer-use viability is unassessed. API scores 8 and is the best path because it is the durable Cloud API contract. CLI also scores 8. MCP scores 7: official remote coverage is useful, but many listed products remain Preview and MCP is not a substitute for the full Cloud API surface.
