Can AI agents automate DaVinci Resolve?

Blackmagic Design · desktop · designproductivity

DaVinci Resolve is automatable today through Blackmagic's official Python and Lua scripting API on a local desktop install. This record is DaVinci Resolve 21, Free and Studio. It is not Premiere Pro. The product page presents Resolve 21 as editing, color, Fusion effects, Fairlight audio, and the new Photo page, with a free download and Studio at $295. The Resolve 21 new-features guide welcomes Mac, Linux, and Windows users. Vendor new-features PDFs document a Scripting API whose detailed reference ships in Help > Documentation > Developer. The Fusion Fuse SDK states that Lua is built into Resolve and Fusion for scripting and for hosting Python, and that Fuses are Lua plugins. Resolve 19.1 and 20.2 list ongoing scripting additions for render jobs, clip names, cloud projects, and graph operations. One independent MIT MCP, github.com/2sem/davinci-resolve-lite-mcp, is listed on the official MCP registry (io.github.2sem/davinci-resolve-lite-mcp, v0.18.0, active 2026-08-24). It runs inside Workspace > Scripts because the free edition blocks external scripting, and the opened README lists macOS as the requirement. Blackmagic has not been shown to declare a first-party MCP server or the absence of one, so first_party and the MCP verdict stay unknown. Material limits are a running desktop session, Studio versus Free external-scripting differences, and an in-app rather than hosted public API catalog. Computer-use viability is unassessed. Scripting scores 6 and is the best path. The third-party MCP scores 3.

No repeatable UI probe was run. Official Python and Lua scripting through Help > Documentation > Developer, Workspace Scripts, and Fusion Fuses automate a local Resolve install. A third-party MCP can host that scripting API inside the Workspace > Scripts menu. This record is DaVinci Resolve 21 Free and Studio. It is not Adobe Premiere Pro.
