Can AI agents automate Microsoft Dataverse?
Microsoft · saas · platformlow-codedatabase
Microsoft Dataverse is automatable today through the Dataverse Web API and a first-party MCP server. The Web API implements OData v4 at https://{org}.api.{region}.dynamics.com/api/data/v9.2/ and performs the same create, retrieve, update, and delete messages as the Organization service using GET, POST, PATCH, and DELETE, plus named functions and actions. Authentication is OAuth 2.0 against Microsoft Entra ID via MSAL. Delegated flows use a /user_impersonation scope. Server-to-server application users use a client secret or certificate and do not consume a paid user license. The official SDK for .NET ServiceClient uses MSAL and can target the Organization service or Web API. Power Platform CLI (pac) authenticates with profiles and operates on Dataverse environments and solutions. Microsoft documents Dataverse as an MCP server at https://{org}.crm.dynamics.com/api/mcp. The go.microsoft.com fwlink 2320176 install target is the Learn page Connect to Dataverse with model context protocol. Tools include search_data, search, create_record, update_record, delete_record, create_table, update_table, delete_table, read_query, describe, skill upsert/delete, and file upload/download. The environment administrator must enable MCP and allowed clients. Tools used by agents outside Copilot Studio have been charged since 2025-12-15 unless a qualifying Dynamics 365 Premium or Microsoft 365 Copilot license applies. The tool surface was renamed, so client allowlists must be reviewed. iPaaS catalogs were not opened as Dataverse connectors. Computer-use viability is unassessed. API scores 8 and is the best path. Use MCP when an allowed client is already configured.
