Can AI agents automate Jira?
Atlassian · hybrid · project-managementissue-trackingdeveloper-tools
Jira Cloud has a broad, maintained automation surface. REST API v3 covers work items, projects, comments, transitions, worklogs, boards, sprints, filters, fields, permissions, audit data, bulk operations, and administration under user permissions and app scopes. OAuth 2.0 is the recommended integration flow, while scoped API tokens support personal and non-interactive automation and Forge supplies Atlassian-hosted JavaScript app execution. Dynamic webhooks and automation rules add event-driven work. The official Atlassian CLI supports Jira work items, boards, dashboards, fields, filters, projects, and sprints with bulk input and JSON or CSV output. Atlassian's cloud-hosted Rovo MCP server is a particularly strong agent path: it searches with JQL and reads, creates, edits, comments, worklogs, and transitions work items through OAuth 2.1 or API tokens, with organization-level permission groups and existing Jira permissions. Rovo MCP is Cloud-only, and Jira Data Center uses separate REST and plugin surfaces. Computer-use viability is unassessed.
